Welcome to the Association of Bunt Doctors

The Bunt community hails from the coastal town of Mangalore in Karnataka, India. Traditionally a warrior class, the Bunts evolved into landowners and agriculturists, playing a vital role in shaping the socio-economic fabric of Coastal Karnataka.

With a proud cultural heritage and strong community values, Bunts gradually migrated to urban centers in search of new opportunities. Many arrived in Bombay (now Mumbai) during the 1950s and 60s, often with limited education and financial resources. Bold, fearless, and entrepreneurial by nature, they took on menial jobs before venturing into the restaurant business—a bold move that led to the community’s remarkable success and recognition in the city’s thriving hospitality industry.

Alongside this growth, several Bunts who moved to the city were also medical professionals. Notable among the early doctors were Dr. N. V. Adyanthaya, Dr. K. R. Shetty, Dr. Hejmadi Balkrishna Shetty, and Dr. P. J. Shetty. Dr. Hejmadi Balkrishna Shetty also served as the President of the Bunts Sangha in the 1960s and helped unite and mobilize the community during its formative years in Bombay.

By the 1990s, the Bunt medical fraternity had grown significantly, with many doctors having studied in Mumbai or elsewhere, and setting up their own successful practices across the city.

It was during a friendly gathering—ironically, a Kitty Party—that a group of Bunt doctor friends conceived the idea of forming an association exclusively for medical practitioners from the community. Key initiators included:

They approached two senior and highly respected members of the community—Dr. K. Raghuram Shetty, a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon and owner of Cumballa Hill Hospital, and Dr. Vishwanath Adyanthaya, a distinguished General Practitioner. Both leaders embraced the idea wholeheartedly, and in 1992, the Bunts Medical Practitioners Association (BMPA) was officially born.

The founding committee held its first meeting at the Radio Club, and soon after, hosted the first community get-together at NSCI Club, Worli, graciously sponsored by Dr. Vishwanath Adyanthaya. Membership began to grow, and the association was formally registered as the Bunts Medical Practitioners Association.

Leadership and Legacy

Dr. K. Raghuram Shetty served as the association’s first President, with Dr. Manjunath Shetty as the Hon. Secretary. Clinical meetings were organized 2–3 times a year, often followed by an annual celebration for members and their spouses. These events were largely sponsored by members or supported by contributions from pharmaceutical companies. Over time, the association even hosted an annual party in a 5-star hotel in Bombay.

In the last decade the Association was struggling to keep the interest alive amongst the members and were finding it difficult to continue having regular Scientific meetings.

Then in 2023 a few members got together and had a meeting at Bunts Sangha with Dr. Sudhir Adyanthaya at the helm as President and Dr. Ranjan Shenava as Secretary. Ideas were taken of how to revive the Association.

There were many more young Bunt Doctors in the city compared to what it was a couple of decades ago so it was thought it was a good opportunity and time to get them all to come together under one umbrella. A Whatsapp Group was formed and it was decided to have a Scientific Programme soon.

On 21^st January 2024 the first meeting was called after a long break and there was keen interest amongst all the doctors who came in with a lot of enthusiasm. We had more than 14o registrations who paid a fee and registered. We had Dr. Shreekant Shetty, the Medico Legal expert who enlightened all on Handling Medico Legal Issues.

This meeting was an ice breaker for many and they wanted to become Life members of the Association. Dr. Uday Shetty took on the job of digitizing the membership list and recording the new members and their fields of Practice.

The Bunt Doctors over the years have been doing some phenomenal work in different specialties of Medicine and they have been in the forefront in Patient Care. They have taken up leadership roles in many reputed Corporate Hospitals. They have grown to be a community that patients trust.

Subsequently, another Scientific Meeting was held on 5^th May 2024 where we had a Advocate Ashok Shetty enlighten us on How to Make a Will. Dr. Sadanand V Shetty, Eminent Cardiologist spoke on Lifestyle Diseases and how to take care of your health. This too was very well attended. The fellowship amongst Bunt Doctors was what made everyone enjoy the evening.

By now, there was need for a change of term and a new Managing Committee was to be formed.

Dr. Sathyaprakash Shetty was Elected as President of the Bunt Medical Practitioners Association. Dr. Uday Shetty was Elected as Secretary of the Association. Dr. Ranjan Shenava and Dr. Ajit Shetty were elected as Vice Presidents. Dr. Vidya Shetty as Treasurer, Dr. Shravan Shetty as Joint Secretary, Dr. Sadanand V Shetty as an Advisor .

There was an elaborate Installation Ceremony conducted on 22^nd September 2024 at Bunts Sangha where the new team including Committee and Sub Committee members were inducted. This was attended by more than 200 Bunt Doctors. This event was covered by the Kannada Press too. The energetic Dr. Sathyaprakash Shetty laid out his vision for the Association and for the Bunt Doctors.

There was another Scientific Session held on 30^th March 2024 at MIG Club where Dr. Sadanand V Shetty spoke to us on CardioPulmonary Resuscitation with demonstration on a Mannequin.

It was then needed to change the name of the Organization for Official reasons hence it was decided to change the name to Association of Bunt Doctors.

It was decided to keep the team the same. With Dr. Sathyaprakash Shetty, the visionary as President the Association will be in good hands.

Graduated MBBS from Govt Medical College Mysore in 1971.Then did Post Graduate Diploma in Dermatology from K E M Hospital Mumbai in 1974.Started practice since then in Ambarnath.
He has two sons, Eldest Dr Ashutosh Shetty. MD.DM ( Neurology) Con.Neurologist practising in Andheri and visiting all big hospitals around. He is married to Dr Divya (MDS ) con.Orthodontist .Practising in VileParle.She is the D/O Jayaram N Shetty and Lata Shetty (Regency group of Hotels).They are blessed with two sons ,eldest Parth is studying medicine in KSHEMA .Mangalore.
His younger son Sohan Shetty (BE Electronics and MBA in foreign trade) doing Logistics Business in JNPT.Married to Rachana, Computer Engineer. Working in Capegemini NRI Co.She is the D/O Dr Nitteguthu Prithviraj Shetty and Nayana Shetty (Bangalore)
Dr Narendranath was the President of Bunts Medical Practitioners Association for two terms and has conducted charitable Medical examination and free medicine in a tribal village, Ambeshiv near Ambarnath visiting it every month for about 2 years.
He has practiced for more than 50 years in Ambarnath and earned good will and respect. He worked as Hon.Dermatologist in Dr Chaya municipal hospital,Century Hospital in Shahad, Prabhat hospital ,Ulhasnagar.

It is a great privilege and honor to lead this esteemed association of medical professionals, now reborn under the inspiring new name – Association of Bunt Doctors (ABD).

Our journey began in 1992 with the establishment of the Bunt Medical Practitioners Association (BMPA) under the dynamic leadership of the late Dr. K. R. Shetty a renowned Cardiothoracic Surgeon of Cumballa Hill Hospital. However, due to various challenges the momentum of the organization slowed down over the years.

In a momentous revival on 22nd September 2024, our visionary senior doctors, in collaboration with energetic and committed young professionals breathed new life into the association giving birth to the Association of Bunt Doctors (ABD).

Our mission is clear – to reach out to the most underprivileged in our community and offer them professional healthcare assistance.

We have a clear vision and a firm resolve to turn that vision into reality. The core aims and objectives of our organization include:

Providing professional medical support to the Bunt community. For this, we have appointed 10 regional committee chairpersons and one chief coordinator. We aim to work closely with Bunts Sangha Mumbai, Bombay Bunts Association, and other regional community organizations.
Organizing preventive health check-ups, cancer detection camps, and blood donation drives.
Promoting community-wide health awareness.
Supporting the health needs of senior citizens.
Creating awareness about organ donation.

As we all know, Health and Education are the true pillars of community transformation. While our community has made remarkable progress in the field of Education, we still have a long way to go in the Healthcare sector.

One of our most cherished dreams is to establish a Bunts Corporate Hospital — a center that will offer affordable and quality healthcare to those in need. We aspire to turn this dream into a reality, with the support of our dedicated community organizations.

Let us join hands and work in unison with all allied associations to make this noble vision come true.

It is my privilege and honour to be elected as the Hon. Secretary of the newly formed Association of Bunt Doctors.

As we hit the Refresh button we are energized to bring a new lease of life to this 33 year old organization.

We want to take forward the efforts of the past Office Bearers of these last so many years and keep our Association strong and healthy.

Our aim of this Organization as a community is to collectively help others medically by mass or small medical projects, spreading medical awareness amongst the public, holding medical seminars for the doctors to better their knowledge thus benefiting the patient and to get our doctors together socially.

Many of our Bunt doctors have been doing a lot of charitable services under various organizations. This is one chance for us to collectively be more effective.

In Mumbai, probably after the Hoteliers the Bunt Doctors are the next largest profession. We Bunt Doctors are very well respected amongst patients and have made a name of ourselves. We Bunts have taken up key posts in many large Corporate Hosptals.

This is an opportunity for all the Bunt Doctors to come together and do something meaningful for Society.

We have many projects planned and look forward to the help from Bunt Doctor members.
